I have memories as a little boy of seeing dead birds and finding them both breathtakingly beautiful and absolutely horrifying. Birds encapsulate such a freedom and a lightness of being – more spiritual than physical. They have a long history of being intermediaries between the mortal and the divine, they manifest the potential for transcendence. The death of a bird is especially potent because this potential is destroyed.
